(More customer reviews)This is my first metal detector. I don't know that I'll make a hobby out ofit. I mostly wanted to locate pipes in the back yard.
Having said that, it seems to be a decent unit. Of course, I haven't tried a super duper detector, so I don't know what I'm missing.
But, for example, I've found a dime down at 4 inches, at the transition between the driveway and grass. No need for ground balance and such. It's automatic.
I'm learning the tones and, while I can't tell you what I'm going to find given a certain tone, it does disc out iron, killing off a lot of trash. I'm now at the point that when it says something is there with disc set, it's now more interesting to dig.
One thing that doesn't seem very accurate is the pin pointing. Or maybe I don't know what I'm doing. But I can get a definite signal at a definite spot, do the same orthogonally, lower the sens to define the spot better, dig the spot, only to find the signal has "moved" a few inches away. I eventually find what's there, but it's not always where it says it is. Makes for bigger holes. (Desert "soil" in Phoenix, AZ.)
I went to a park for fun. If you want to coin shoot, it does fine, especially considering coins from a party the night before will be on the surface. You don't need a $500 unit for that.
For a first time unit, I can't complain, especially considering the price. I read that Fisher is selling its F2 with two coils for $200 for December which sounds like a smoking deal. If you think you're going to make a hobby out of m.d., maybe it would be better to spend the money toward that. Otherwise, for an occasional unit, this is fine.
